Mountain Medicine, Inc. was founded in the late 1970s by a group of medical health professionals who wanted to help others help others. Will Houghton wanted to be a part of the nonprofit organization near Ashburnham because he wanted to offer his own skills teaching and helping people as a doctor and medic in the field. He is the director of the organization and he believes that his students should be prepared to help their peers in dangerous situations and be in position to help others in the event of a natural disaster. Houghton was one of the first doctors on the ground after the Haitian earthquake of 2010. He helped set up a medical clinic in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince despite a lack of communication, resources, and support from the local and international government.
